Classic Gobi Desert Tour
The single most-sold Mongolian route: a loop through the South Gobi that strings together the ice-filled Yolyn Am gorge, the Khongoryn Els dune field and the red sandstone of Bayanzag, usually with a camel ride and a nomad-family visit built in. Operators sell it two ways — overland from Ulaanbaatar, which costs a long 8-9 hour driving day at each end, or with a domestic flight to Dalanzadgad that buys back roughly two days. Nights are in tourist ger camps with shared Western-style washblocks; the vehicle is a van or 4WD, not a coach. Four to six days is the normal length, and almost every operator warns that adding a day is better than compressing it.

- Day 1
Ulaanbaatar to the South Gobi
Either a 1.5-hour flight to Dalanzadgad plus about 2 hours on the road, or an 8-9 hour overland drive. Afternoon in Yolyn Am, a narrow gorge inside Gurvan Saikhan National Park with a small local museum. Night in a tourist ger camp.

Khongoryn Els dunes
Around 200 km / 5 hours west to the dune belt. Roughly one hour on a Bactrian camel, a walk up the dune ridge for sunset, and a visit to a herder family. Ger camp.

Bayanzag, the Flaming Cliffs
About 160 km / 4 hours. Red sandstone cliffs that are one of the world's best-known dinosaur fossil localities, plus the saxaul woodland nearby. Some operators add the Khavtsgait petroglyphs. Ger camp.
- Day 4
Tsagaan Suvarga or return
Overland itineraries add the White Stupa escarpment here, a 6-7 hour driving day from the capital side. Fly-in itineraries instead drive about 100 km / 1 hour back to Dalanzadgad for the flight to Ulaanbaatar.

Back to Ulaanbaatar
Long transfer day if overland. Most operators end with souvenir and cashmere shopping and a farewell dinner in the city.

Accommodation
Tourist ger camps almost throughout: 2-4 beds per ger, 220V electricity, and shower and toilet blocks shared between gers rather than en-suite. Some operators sell an en-suite ger upgrade — Selena Travel prices it at US$55 per night. One or two hotel nights in Ulaanbaatar at each end are common and are frequently excluded from the headline price.
Vehicle
Air-conditioned private van or 4WD, typically 4-5 passengers per vehicle. This matters because the Gobi legs are largely unpaved: a 200 km stage is a 5-hour stage. The domestic flight to Dalanzadgad is the single biggest itinerary lever — it removes two 8-9 hour driving days but caps checked baggage at about 15 kg plus 5 kg cabin.
