Basis

Listed by Mongolia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Consular Department) as a visa exemption for all passport types, up to 90 days, for tourism purposes only, in force from 2022-06-01. The same entry carries an explicit end date.

Registration

A stay of 30 days or more has to be registered with the Immigration Agency within 7 days of arrival, with photo and fingerprints taken for a foreigner registration card, and cancelled again on departure. Separately, whoever provides the accommodation must register the guest online within 48 hours of entry.

e-Visa

Not needed for tourism inside the exemption. If a visa is required for another purpose, the published fee schedule (Government Resolution 195 of 2021-07-07, table effective 2026-01-01) is USD 50 single entry standard / USD 95 urgent; USD 65 / USD 125 double entry; USD 105 / USD 205 for six-month multiple entry.

Tourism only. This is the one major market whose exemption line itself is dated, so a 2027 trip cannot be planned on the assumption that 90 days visa-free still applies. Korean travellers staying beyond the exemption need a visa obtained in advance.

Basis

Bilateral visa exemption covering all passport types, up to 30 days, in force since 2010-04-01. No end date is shown against this entry, so it does not sit inside the temporary 2023-2026 programme.

Registration

Over 30 days: register with the Immigration Agency within one week of arrival; photograph and fingerprints are taken. Failure attracts a fine and can block departure, and the registration must be cancelled when leaving. A visa-free visitor who wants to stay past 30 days must apply to the Immigration Agency to extend the short-stay permission.

e-Visa

Not needed for tourism up to 30 days. A longer stay requires a visa obtained before travel; Japan's foreign ministry directs enquiries to the Mongolian Embassy in Tokyo.

Japan's foreign ministry restated the 30-day exemption as current in July 2025 on a page last updated 2025-08-22.

Basis

Bilateral visa exemption for all passport types, up to 90 days, in force since 2001-07-06. No end date is attached.

Registration

Register with the Immigration Agency within 7 days if staying 30 days or more, and cancel it on exit. The accommodation provider registers every foreign guest within 48 hours regardless of length of stay.

e-Visa

Not needed for a tourist stay within 90 days. Where a US citizen does need a Mongolian visa, the published fee schedule sets reciprocal rates far above the standard ones: USD 185 for A1/A2-A3/K1/E/K2, USD 205 for C and J, USD 315 for B.

The US State Department's own Mongolia page blocked automated access on 2026-09-21, so the figures here come from the Mongolian foreign ministry's list rather than a US source.

Mongolia's temporary tourist visa exemption programme. British nationals are number 32 on the list of 34 countries, all passport types, up to 30 days, in force from 2023-01-04. The Mongolian foreign ministry heads this table as a temporary exemption running 2023-2026, and the UK government states the same end date.

Registration

Registration is required. Hotels and landlords normally do it through an app; an independent traveller or someone staying with friends has to register themselves with the Immigration Agency. A digital residence permit is issued and should be carried.

e-Visa

Not needed for tourism up to 30 days. Longer stays, work, study and business require a visa arranged in advance through the Mongolian immigration system or the Mongolian Embassy in the UK.

A notarised parental consent letter is needed for a child travelling without their parents. Travellers should check that their passport is actually stamped at border control.

Basis

Two different bases, which matters for 2027. Germany holds a standing bilateral exemption (all passports, 30 days, shown as in force from 2013-09-01) with no end date. The other 26 EU member states sit on the temporary 2023-2026 programme (30 days, tourism, from 2023-01-04): Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden. Non-EU European nationalities on the same temporary list are Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Monaco.

Registration

Same rules as every other nationality: host registration within 48 hours, and the traveller's own registration with the Immigration Agency within 7 days for stays of 30 days or more.

e-Visa

Not needed for tourism up to 30 days while the exemption holds. If the programme is not renewed for 2027, affected nationalities would fall back on the e-visa or an embassy application.

The list is by nationality, not by Schengen membership, so Ireland, Bulgaria, Romania and Cyprus are covered while the entry is unrelated to the Schengen area itself. Germany is the one EU nationality whose entry would survive a lapse of the temporary programme. The Mongolian-language version of the same table shows a slightly different in-force date for Germany (2013-05-08) than the English one, so treat the exact date as approximate.

Canada's advice and Japan's differ in the deadline they quote, because they describe two separate duties. The accommodation provider must register the guest through the Immigration Agency within 48 hours of arrival. The traveller's own registration, required when the stay will reach 30 days or more, is within 7 days of arrival.

e-Visa

Not needed for a tourist stay of up to 30 days.

Canada's advisory as read on 2026-09-21 also flagged nationwide fuel shortages with rationing, affecting road and air transport, and advised confirming flights and carrying insurance against disruption.

Not needed for tourism up to 30 days. Australia is the one nationality for which Mongolia's e-visa portal runs a Work and Holiday Maker stream, open to applicants aged 18 to 30 who have not previously used a Work and Holiday or Working Holiday programme.

Australia's own Smartraveller advisory could not be opened on 2026-09-21, so these figures rest on the Mongolian primary source.

Not part of the temporary 2023-2026 programme, so unaffected by its expiry.

Basis

Nationalities outside the exemption tables need a visa. Mongolia's official e-visa portal is evisa.mn, operated by the Immigration Agency; the Immigration Agency also publishes the list of countries eligible to use it.

Same for all foreign nationals: the accommodation provider registers the guest within 48 hours, and the traveller registers with the Immigration Agency within 7 days of arrival when the stay reaches 30 days or more.

e-Visa

Three e-visa categories are offered: K2 for tourists, K4 for participants in sport, cultural and arts events and film or content production, and K6 for transit of up to 10 days. The Mongolian Embassy in Tokyo describes the e-visa as issued to citizens of 98 eligible countries and delivered by email within 72 hours, with no need to hand in a passport at a mission. The published fee schedule, effective 2026-01-01 under Government Resolution 195 of 2021-07-07, is USD 50 single entry standard and USD 95 urgent; USD 65 / USD 125 double entry; USD 105 / USD 205 for six-month multiple entry; USD 205 / USD 405 for six-month-to-one-year multiple entry; transit from USD 25. US citizens pay higher reciprocal rates. Nationals of countries not on the e-visa list apply at the nearest Mongolian embassy.

An e-visa is non-extendable and non-convertible, does not guarantee admission, and must be carried in printed or digital form for the airline and border officers. Travellers must arrive on the passport used in the application; if the passport has since been replaced, the old one has to be carried too. Biometrics are captured at border control on arrival. The Immigration Agency has repeatedly warned about fake visa-permit documents sold by intermediaries and asks travellers to verify permits on its own systems.
